Incubation is 45 to 70 days depending on the species and the temperature of the sand. Warmer nests go faster. A loggerhead nest laid in early May might hatch by late June. Late July into early August is the most active stretch. One in a thousand make it to adulthood. The nest does reasonably well: about 85 percent of eggs develop. But the moment a hatchling surfaces from the sand, it’s on its own in an environment where almost everything nearby eats it. Ghost crabs working the tide line. Pelicans overhead. Sea turtles don’t have sex chromosomes. Sex isn’t determined at fertilisation the way it is in mammals. It gets determined weeks later, during incubation, by the temperature of the sand surrounding the nest. There’s a threshold, around 29 degrees Celsius or 84 Fahrenheit. The crawl tracks are the most striking sign. A loggerhead female weighs 200 to 350 pounds. When she hauls herself across the beach, she leaves wide parallel flipper impressions that look almost like tyre tracks from the waterline up to the dunes. A fresh set from the night before is clearly visible in morning sand before foot traffic or tide disturbs it.
One-way tracks tell you something specific. If the tracks go up the beach but not back, she nested and returned to the surf. If you see tracks going both ways but no disturbed area at the top, she made a false crawl: came up, didn’t find the right conditions, and went back without nesting. Volunteer patrols read these every morning to assess what happened overnight.
If You Want Something More Certain: Hatchling Release Events

Wild hatchings don’t care about your schedule. You can spend multiple nights on a dark beach and see nothing, then have a nest open the morning after you leave. Conservation organisations run a different type of event that’s worth knowing about: structured hatchling releases.
These involve turtles that were rescued after becoming disoriented by artificial light or found struggling in the nest after the main emergence. Once assessed and ready, staff release them at night and allow participants to watch. It’s not spontaneous wildlife. But it’s also not staged. After the Water: Where They Go
The hatchling makes it past the surf. That’s the moment everyone photographs and the moment the story stops in most guides. What happens next is actually more remarkable and almost nobody covers it.
Hatchlings swim almost continuously for the first day or two, driving offshore away from coastal predators. They get picked up by the Gulf Stream and other offshore current systems and carried out into the open ocean. Loggerhead hatchlings from Florida’s east coast end up in the North Atlantic gyre, a circular current that sweeps them toward Europe and eventually back. They use floating patches of Sargasso weed as cover and hunt small invertebrates.
For three to seven years, they’re essentially invisible to science. This gap has a name: the lost years. No tracking method has ever followed them through it in real time. After dark, July to August, on a northeast Florida beach that’s actively monitored and genuinely dark. Anastasia State Park beaches are the best option in the St. Augustine area. From the Water: The Matanzas Option
Standing on a dark beach at midnight isn’t for everyone. The Matanzas River gives you sea turtles in a completely different setting. Juvenile green turtles feed in the shallows throughout the warmer months. Smaller than nesting females, less dramatic in the obvious sense, but a turtle surfacing to breathe a few feet from your kayak in a quiet tidal creek has its own quality of experience.
